Where to eat: Mother India, Fredrikstad

Don’t be put off by the drab exterior – this is one of Fredrikstad’s best restaurants, much better in fact than some of the posher (and much pricier) places in town. Excellent food, warm atmosphere, friendly service and good prices (by Norwegian standards at least!). There are over 30 main courses to choose from, including a good selection of vegetarian dishes, and unusually for an Indian restaurant, several seafood dishes featuring fish as well as prawns. If you’re more of a meat lover, the lamb tikka masala comes highly recommended, but the chicken dishes are also popular. The restaurant is on the small side so it can get hot in there (especially if you order one of the extra spicy dishes). Prices range from 120kr for a vegetable curry to 190kr for a king prawn dish (including rice).

Mother India, Nygardsgata 17. Tel: 69 31 22 00. Open Mon-Sat 16-23, Sun 14-22.
