Fredrikstad Cathedral
Posted by admin in History and architecture on November 6, 2009
Fredrikstad red brick cathedral was built in 1880, in the new gothic style that was popular for such buildings at the time. It was restored and enlarged in 1954, and today can hold up to 1,100 people. Of particular interest inside are the stained-glass windows by Emanuel Vigeland (1917), the richly decorated pulpit and the colourful wooden altar piece dating back to 1897 (it was the work of one Wilhelm Peters, and represents Jesus healing the blind man). The cathedral is located in Nygaardsgata in the city centre, and is surrounded by a little park. Concerts take place in the cathedral throughout the year – the local choir performs here regularly, and is quite popular. Fredrikstad cathedral also has a special feature that makes it quite unique – it doubles up as a lighthouse. A lantern is mounted in the 72m high church spire – it was installed there to help sailors navigate the Glomma estuary.
