Where to eat: Jacob Aall, Fredrikstad

The latest branch of Jacob Aall, which has outlets in both Oslo and Bergen, this bar and brasserie on the promenade has been proving very popular since it opened in October 2009. The menu features salads, sandwiches, burgers and pasta, as well as slightly more elaborate dishes such as lamb (served with ratatouille) or halibut (season’s vegetables and baked potato). The food is good, and the service friendly, although it can get a bit hectic at peak times. The selection of wines by the glass, however, is limited. Desserts, which include crème brûlée, cheese cake and chocolate fondant, round up a pleasant meal. They crank up the music at around 11pm, so if you want to be able to chat during your meal it’s better to eat before then. Open late. Big terrace outside. Small children’s menu. Expect to pay 250kr for a main course (burgers, salads and pasta dishes around kr150).
