Posted by admin in Photos and videos on December 31, 2009
Love it or hate it, Fairytales, the song with which Alexander Rybak won the Eurovision song contest for Norway back in May, was for many the hit of 2009. Fitting to feature it here on the last day of the year I figured. Bet you hear that tune again a few times tonight if you’re out and about partying… Have a good one, and see you next year!

The last woman to be executed in Norway in 1876
Posted by admin in History and architecture on December 30, 2009
Sophie Johannesdatter, a Swedish woman originally from a poor family in Dalsland, was the last woman to be executed in Norway. She had come over the border to Halden from Sweden in 1868 and got a job as a servant at the local wholesaler, Herr Niels Anker Stang, where she lived and worked for several years.
Her three victims, all poisoned with arsenic, were a co-worker who owed her money, her employer’s wife, whom she had never liked, and lastly her employer himself, Stang – who had discovered she was stealing from him, and was considering giving her the sack.
Local police became suspicious of her when she tried to murder a fourth victim, another servant who had become sick, first by poisoning her with arsenic like the others, and when that failed because the girl was too sick to drink the poisoned liquid, then by setting fire to the house.
The police later found out that Sophie had been in possesion of arsenic, and when the corpses of her three victims where dug up during the course of a new investigation, high traces of poison were found in all three. Sophie Johannesdatter was sentenced to death, and was decapitated on Halden’s main square on 18 February 1876 in front of a 3,000-strong crowd. She was the last woman to be publicly executed in Norway.

Østfold: A few facts and figures
Posted by admin in Uncategorized on December 28, 2009
With an area of only 4,186 km², Østfold is Norway’s second smallest county. It is, however, one of the country’s most densely populated, with 265,000 inhabitants, or around 5.6% of the total population.
The number of inhabitants per km² in Østfold is 66, compared to a national average of 12.
Østfold is also one of Norway’s flattest counties (the highest point in Østfold culminates at an unimpressive 336m, or 1,102ft, above sea level), and one of the best regions for agriculture (only 3% of Norway’s surface is arable land, and a great part of this can be found in Østfold). Two thirds of Østfold are covered by forest.
The main towns are: Fredrikstad (72,000 inhabitants), Sarpsborg (51,000 inhabitants), Moss (29,000 inhabitants) and Halden (28,000 inhabitants). Other towns are Mysen and Askim, both in Indre Østfold.

- You wear gloves, scarf, hat and a jacket – indoors.
- You wear your clothes to bed because you can’t face undressing.
- All of a sudden longjohns seem quite fashionable.
- You avoid washing your hair as you know it will take ages to dry it.
- You worry the toothpaste in the bathroom might freeze.

- Even your neighbour’s Saab doesn’t start.
- You actually look forward to eating soup.
- You stop arguing about who should do the dishes, because it doesn’t seem such a chore at all.
- The locals start saying that it’s a bit chilly.

- Politician talk about the homeless, and it’s not Christmas.
- You finally decide to forget about the gas bill.
- Breathing hurts.
