US president Barack Obama visits Oslo

The spotlight will be on Norway today as President Barack Obama comes to Oslo to collect his Nobel Peace Prize. The US president, who was awarded the prestigious prize in October this year, was hailed for his willingness to reach out to the Islamic world, his commitment to putting a stop to the spread of nuclear weapons and his strong desire to bring the Israelis and Palestinians into serious, fruitful negotiations. Whether he is a worthy recipient of the prize has been hotly debated in both the national and international press of late, but one thing is for sure – this is good PR for Norway, and good PR for Oslo. Shame Mr Obama’s tight schedule could not include a day trip to Østfold – maybe next time? The Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony will take place in Oslo town hall, and will be watched by millions the world over.
