Where to eat in Gamlebyen, Fredrikstad

- Mormors Café: The locals’ favourite, this cosy cafe serves yummy home-baked cakes and filled ciabattas, not to mention the chocolate truffles (a house speciality). The place to go for lunch. Open 11 (12) -18. Corner of Voldportgaten and Rådhusgaten. Tel: 69 32 16 60, www.chocoloco.no

- Bakeriet: Just across the street from Mormors Café, another popular spot for a hot drink and a pastry, or a sandwich in homely surroundings, although the place can get crowded at times. No dinner. Voldportgaten 71.

- Peppes: Huge pizzas to share. It’s a chain, but the dining room, with its low vaulted ceiling, is quite atmospheric. What’s more, it’s the only budget option in the evening. Open 12-23. Toldbodgaten. Tel: 22 22 55 55, www.peppes.no

- Majorstuen: Well-established restaurant serving traditional Norwegian food, including the occasional whale or reindeer steak. Voldportgaten. Open 12 til late. Tel: 69 32 15 55, www.majoren.no

- Prestegaarden (formerly Balaklava): Fine dining in the Old Town. The place to splash out for a special occasion. The menu changes with the season. Open 15-21. Faergeportgaten 39. Tel: 69 32 20 20, www.balaklava.no
