Based on a book by David Howarth, this black and white film dating back to 1957 tells the true story of Jan Baalsrud, the only survivor after a sabotage mission by a Norwegian resistance unit goes wrong during WW2. Chased by German officers, Baalsrud struggles for days to reach safety over the Swedish border, and only makes it thanks to the bravery of his compatriots, many of them putting their own lives at risk to help him along the way. His story is one of endurance and solidarity in times of hardship, a theme close to Norwegian hearts – audiences for a long time regarded Nine Lives as the greatest Norwegian film ever made. It was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 1958, and remains a classic of Norwegian cinema. The film was directed by Arne Skouen, with Jack Fjeldstad, the quintessential Norwegian hero, in the leading role as Jan Baalsrud (Original title: Ni Liv).
