About

obamicon moose 3 square smaller been there recommends

Hi and welcome to this blog! I moved to Fredrikstad, Østfold, two years ago, and fell in love with this wonderful part of southern Norway. There is unfortunately very little info currently available in English about Østfold, hence the idea for this blog. I hope you enjoy reading it, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or suggestions.

Happy reading!

    Hi there
Saw your blog was tipped about on Been There (by you?!). Anyway, thought it warranted a flagging up on the site so here it is: http://www.ivebeenthere.co.uk/

Hi, fantastic – making PR for Østfold!
I am working with The Sornes Clock – Sørnes uret, one of the world’s most complicated watches made in modern times. It is situated at Borgarsyssel museum in Sarpsborg. I have just started a group at FaceBook, the link is

    Hei!
Great site! How industrious of you to begin your own information site for Ostfold. I formerly lived in Stavanger which has plenty of publicity. Now I live in New York. I like your information and you have covered many aspects of your area. Good luck with this.

Wouldn’t mind some PR in return if you get the chance :-)

In 2002 we had a reunion on nearby Hvaler, the birthplace of my great grandfather Karl Karlsen. We observed the 100th anniversary of his emigration to the U.S. with his family, including my 12-year-old grandfather. There were over 600 cousins to greet us when we returned “home.” It was a very moving trip. I will look forward to returning.

Do you have a map of the Ostfold region on your website? I’m wondering if Haddeland is in this region.

  15. #15 by admin on March 15, 2010 - 8:24 am

Hi Barb, I’m working on a map with all the main attractions in Østfold, so watch this space. But Hadeland is not in Østfold. It’s north of Oslo (we’re south). Hadeland is famous for its glassworks in Jevnaker, among other things.

  16. #16 by Bengt Borresen on March 25, 2010 - 8:50 pm

Hi Barb & Elusive Moose: Location north of Oslo is correct, if you mean Hadeland, the landscape. If you mean “Hadeland – The Art Gallery” – in fact there is an art & cultural centre with that name right outside the city of Moss (municipality of Rygge) in the very northern region of Østfold. Beautiful place, traditional Norwegian farmstead building style, echibitions regularly. This cultural centre in Rygge is named Hadeland because the houses were rebuilt there after having been moved (last century) from… exactly: Hadeland, the landscape! Visit Rygge Art Society: http://www.ryggekunst.com

By the way, Elusive: Your blog is just awesome! “Hi world. This is Østfold! Pay us a visit. Tons of things to do, places to see”. Just great!

  18. #18 by admin on March 25, 2010 - 9:11 pm

Hi Bengt, thanks for that, you almost made me blush there ;-)
You’re absolutely right about Hadeland Galleri… I haven’t been (yet) but I’ve heard about it, I meant to check out the exhibition by Armand Bentzen there a couple of months ago but somehow missed it… I’ll add it to my (ever-growing) list of places to visit!

What an amazing blog you have, Moose !
I have travelled across Østfold in the past, but I didn’t know that there is so much to be done or seen up there! Thanks to you, I realise that I must absolutely come back again.

I have a sentimental attachment to this place : the landscapes in the countryside as well as the views on the coastlines are beautiful indeed, but above all, the people I have met in Østfold are among the kindest I have known. (I hope you’ll tell them, they deserve it !).
And Fredrikstad is not only a lovely and pleasant town : I also remember it as the place where happened one of the funniest events of my life, involving an unfortunate drunken soldier (I not sure the story is worth telling, though) !

I hope I’ll have the chance to thank you some day (with a drink in Gamlebyen, for instance ?) in recognition of all the very useful information that you kindly share here.

Lykke til ! Et un salut amical depuis Paris.

Hi Geitost (love the name by the way) ;-)
Thank you so much for this, you made my day! Looks like you’re just about as passionate about Østfold as I am. That’s great!! And yes of course you must come back! I never say no to a drink, so do get in touch next time you’re in town, and we can exchange Østfold-related stories and tips over a glass of wine or two :-) Tusen takk again, og vi snakkes!

Thanks for your comments on my blogg. I `ll be back to visit the old Fredrikstad this summer. It`s a beautiful place.

I should definitely try to come to Østfold, since your site is filled with gorgeous pictures of the place. I’ve apparently come across one of the best-looking sites on the Internet for all things Østfold and Norway. Your site is an absolute treasure trove of USEFUL information and richly-detailed pictures (can’t believe these beautiful places even exist! better than the expensive travel books:) for anyone both experienced or just starting out in experiencing the country and culture, especially the southern part, all in a neat and well-organized website.

…You have been very helpful to me since the day I came to know you. The way you write about Norwegian lifestyle in your website is very enchanting. I love it. I hope to read such article as it teaches many more about Norwegian living. I am busy with Norwegian Language learning. I am trying to learn it from teach yourself Norwegian series…

    Hello! Great site!
You should come up to Fossumbrua, the bridge between Askim og Spydeberg. Here you can walk Langnesstien along Glomma. This is a great track from Fossum to Langnes skanse where we fought the Swedes some 200 years ago. At Fossum you also can see some bunkers used during the German invasion WW2- and here you also find a monument over the norwegians who were killed in hard fights there in april 1940.
