Moss has many good cafes to choose from, and Café Brandstrup is one of the best. Housed in a listed building right next door to Gallery Henrik Gerner, and boasting oak interiors and original art on the walls, it’s a cosy venue for lunch, or a drink in the afternoon. In summer sitting outside is also an option. The menu features the usual suspects, from hot and cold sandwiches to soups and salad, as well as cakes, pastries and excellent coffee. Café Brandstrup is popular with local artists and is known as the town’s cultural cafe. Concert take place in the evening once or twice a month. Open 7 days a week. Mon-Thur 11am-5pm, Fri-Sat 11am-midnight, Sun 12-5pm.

Where to go for a drink: Verdensspeilet, Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad’s most popular coffee bar, opposite the Blå Grotte on Gågata (the main pedestrian street). It’s a great place to while away a Sunday afternoon with friends, or meet up before a movie at the nearby cinema. Teas and coffees, plus cakes and pastries are the order of the day – the lemon, ginger and honey tea is a good choice on a cold winter day. Friendly service, cosy interior and convivial atmosphere. There are quite a few tables outside, so you can watch life go by as you sip your cappuccino. Open late. Local musicians occasionally perform on the tiny stage.
Nygaardsgata 23. Tel: 69 30 93 61, www.verdensspeilet.no (Norwegian only)
