Top 5: Best Norwegian movies of the past decade
Posted by admin in Art, culture and literature on December 26, 2009
Many good films have been made in Norway in the past 10 years. Here are some of my favourites.
- Vinterland: The story of a Kurdish immigrant’s life in northern Norway, and his quest to find a bride. Insightful, touching and funny at the same time. (2007)
- Max Manus: A huge success as the box office, this war movie focuses on Norway’s most famous resistance leader during WW2. (2008)
- Gone with the Woman: Beautifully shot and very funny romantic comedy based on Erlend Loe’s novel of the same name. (2007)
- The Kautokeino Rebellion: The true story of the Kautokeino uprising in northern Norway in 1852. With stunning music by Sami musician Mari Boine. (2008)
- Elling: Oscar nominated comedy about two 40-something friends struggling to adapt to normal life in Oslo after being released from a state home. Based on a popular novel by Ingvar Ambjørnsen (2001)

Loop: Award-winning Norwegian film by Sjur Paulsen
Posted by admin in Art, culture and literature on November 27, 2009
Loop (2005) is an award-winning documentary following four Norwegians who have decided to live their lives to the full, and make their dreams happen. Narrated by the 92-year-old alpinist and philosopher Arne Næss, it’s a beautiful reminder that life is what you make of it – but also that you sometimes have to take a risk to find happiness. The protagonists in the movie, amateurs with no former acting experience, all leave modern life’s hectic pace and society’s constraints behind to reconnect with nature. We follow a base-jumper struggling to ascend a particularly steep cliff face. Two part-time fishermen who make for the spectacular Lofoten islands in the middle of winter to ski in extreme conditions. And an ambulance driver who every year spends four months living at the top of Linneklepen firewatch tower, surveying the forests of Indre Østfold in almost complete solitude. What they all have in common is a desire to find out what makes them happy – and act on it. A film that will get you thinking, and stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
Loop (2005). Directed by Sjur Paulsen. Norwegian with English subtitles.

Fredrikstad Animation Festival
Posted by admin in Art, culture and literature, News on November 11, 2009
Today is the official opening of the Fredrikstad Animation Festival. The festival is the oldest animation festival in the Nordic and Baltic countries, and an important platform for animators throughout Scandinavia. In other words a great opportunity to check out young talent, learn more about animation, and see a wide range of animated movies. Student films, commissioned films and commercials, and short films all take part in the competition. The festival, which lasts for 5 days, will feature talks, workshops and screenings. Many of the events are free. There is lots for kids too, with a free screening of Monsters, Inc (Sat at 6pm) and free animation workshops among other things. More on www.animationfestival.no
National Cinema Day (Den Store Kinodagen)
Posted by admin in Art, culture and literature, News on November 7, 2009
An event taking place in all cinemas throughout Norway, always on the first Saturday of November. Basically this means extra screenings and half price tickets throughout the day. Turn up early for the most popular movies, and expect long queues (event if you’ve booked online) and lots of teenagers eating pop corn in the seats behind you. But at tickets from NKr 30, who cares?
