A fantastic film, which came out last year (2009), directed by Sara Johnsen, and featuring a group of mostly unknown actors in the main roles. This comedy, which is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking, touches on a variety of universal themes (love, loss, identity and guilt among them) while at the same time painting an insightful portrait of today’s Norwegian society, and the challenges it faces, be it Norway’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan, or the fate of immigrants in Oslo. A touching story, backed by great acting, make this a must see film.

From the producers:

As young children, half-siblings Axel and Yanne are adopted to Norway. They are separated on arrival, he to material wealth on Oslo’s west side, she to an average family on the east side. In contrast to her younger brother, Yanne remembers their journey to Norway, but she has no idea where he might be now. All this is about to change, however, as Yanne’s Polish friend Maria starts working as a maid for Axel’s parents, there discovering a photograph of a young boy. Maria has seen the same picture on the wall of Yanne’s flat. She decides to reunite them. But before having time to realize the consequences, she sets in motion a chain of events which throws many people into emotional turmoil.

Harald Zwart is a Norwegian film director, born in Holland in 1965, who grew up in Fredrikstad, Østfold. He started directing short films, music videos (including a couple for A-Ha) and commercials, before moving on to feature-length movies. He has since achieved a degree of success in Hollywood, where he is now based, with films such as One Night at McCool’s (starring Liv Tyler, Matt Dillon, John Goodman and Michael Douglas) and The Pink Panther 2, with big names such as Steve Martin, Jean Reno and Andy García.

In Norway he is more famous for directing Lange Flate Ballær, a film about football fans in his hometown of Fredrikstad, which was a big hit at the box office, and its sequel, Lange Flate Ballær 2, about a group of Norwegian misfits who undergo a week of National Guard training. Zwart’s latest film, The Karate Kid, a remake of the 1984 movie of the same name, tells the story of a young boy from Detroit who moves to China with his mum and starts learning kung fun after getting a thrashing by the local bullies. The movie, which stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (the son of actor Will Smith), has been very well received in the US, and will premiere in Norway at Fredrikstad Cinema on 23 July.

Did you know? Harald Zwart always adds props that represent Fredrikstad and its football club, FFK, in his movies. And he also owns a cafe, Zwart Cafe, in Gamlebyen.

Based on a book by David Howarth, this black and white film dating back to 1957 tells the true story of Jan Baalsrud, the only survivor after a sabotage mission by a Norwegian resistance unit goes wrong during WW2. Chased by German officers, Baalsrud struggles for days to reach safety over the Swedish border, and only makes it thanks to the bravery of his compatriots, many of them putting their own lives at risk to help him along the way. His story is one of endurance and solidarity in times of hardship, a theme close to Norwegian hearts – audiences for a long time regarded Nine Lives as the greatest Norwegian film ever made. It was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 1958, and remains a classic of Norwegian cinema. The film was directed by Arne Skouen, with Jack Fjeldstad, the quintessential Norwegian hero, in the leading role as Jan Baalsrud (Original title: Ni Liv).

One of the most successful Norwegian films of 2008, based on the equally popular novel by Stavanger author Tore Renberg (the book sold over 100,000 copies in Norway), this is the story of two teenage friends, Jarle and Yngve, and their ‘coming out’, as they slowly discover their feelings for each other, and struggle to acknowledge them. It’s not so much a gay movie though, as a universal one, covering themes that many will relate to, including the insecurities felt by all teenagers, while at the same time celebrating the energy and sheer lust for life that comes with being young. Red-head Rolf Kristian Larsen, who plays the movie’s main character, Jarle Kleppe, was a newcomer with only a few shorts to his name before being cast in the role. He pulled it off, and in fact he is so endearing that it’s easy to identify with him, whatever your sexual orientation. Bittersweet and touching at the same time, it’s little wonder the film was a success with audiences and critics alike.

‘November 1989. The Berlin wall collapses. In Stavanger, Jarle Klepp (17) has no idea that everything is about to change. So far he has got everything; the best girlfriend in the world, and the world’s coolest buddy. Together they will soon launch Stavanger’s toughest punk band, “Mattias Rust Band”. But then the new boy in class, Yngve, appears. He is not like anyone else, and Jarle is confused. He does not know what to do. All he knows is that he cannot stop meeting Yngve, even if it involves doing things he really hates, like listening to Duran Duran and playing tennis. Slowly but steadily Jarle lets everyone around him down, and finds out what it means to stand alone.’ (Motlys AS, Production Company)

Directed by Stian Kristiansen, with Rolf Kristian Larsen in the main role. More info on the movie, in English, here http://www.nordiskfilmogtvfond.com/index.php?sid=60&ptid=3

And for readers in the UK: The film will be screened in London during the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival later this month (BFI Southbank, 27 and 29 March, 8.30pm).
