From Mexico to Norway – Ana Luisa Rébora

Another local artist whose work I love. I was actually very tempted to buy one of her paintings at the exhibition she had at Soli Brug, Sarpsborg, a couple of years ago – it was a rather big painting of a group of people by what looked like a huge waterfall, in shades of blue, browns and white – reminded me of Gullfoss in Island, very atmospheric, and just beautiful! Only the price tag (around 10,000Kr if I remember correctly) stopped me ;-) Anyway… When I say local artist I mean an artist based here, by the way, because Ana Luisa comes from Mexico originally, but Norway has been her home for the past 10 years – she now lives in Eidsberg, Indre-Østfold, although she still spends the winter in Mexico whenever she can. Her husband grows and sells organic Christmas trees, while she paints in her studio. Check out her work at www.analuisarebora.com or even better, visit her exhibition at Gallery Stallen in Gamlebyen, Fredrikstad, which is on until 30 July.

Did you know? About Indre-Østfold

- There are several hydro-electric power stations along the River Glomma, and the ones in Indre-Østfold are among the oldest in Norway. Vamma in Askim is the largest of its kind in the country.

- Saxophonist Jan Garbarek, one of Norway’s best-known musicians, was born in Mysen in March 1947. He was the only child of a former Polish prisoner of war and a Norwegian farmer’s daughter.

- Traces of settlements found at Høgnipen in Degernes, Rakkestad, date back to the Stone Age (around 10,000 years ago) and are the eldest found in Norway. Sea level was then much higher, and Høgnipen was an island – local people used to fish here.

- Risen Grotte in Marker is a very special place. The cave, which took 10 years to build, is made or rock and timber only, and there is no electricity – instead the cave is lit up by no fewer than 600 candles. www.risengrotte.no (Norwegian only)

- Linnekleppen and Haukenesfjellet may be better known, but it’s Slavasshøgda in Rømskog that is, at 336m (1,102 ft), the highest vantage point in Østfold.

- Indre-Østfold has been a centre for motorsport in Norway for many years, and the area has some of the best facilities in the country, including Rudskogen Motor Park in Rakkestad. Michael Schumacher is one of the shareholders! www.rudskogen.no (Norwegian only)

Lannem Pottery

Established for over 50 years, Lannem Pottery, located just outside Rakkestad in Indre-Østfold, is one of the oldest in Norway. Here you can watch the local potter at work in the studio, shaping the clay on his wheel, before browsing the big showroom for the finished product – an extensive range of Lannem earthenware and ceramics are on sale, with a range of colours and models to choose from. Bargain hunters should look out for the second grade products (products with minor flaws, yet fully usable) not retailing in other shops, but available at a good price at Lannem. Østfoldstua, the onsite cafe, is a cosy place if you fancy a hot drink or a waffle, and there are picnic tables outside should you visit on a sunny summer day.

Along Rv22, 4km north of Rakkestad. Tel: 69 22 20 12, www.lannem.no. Opening times: Mon-Fri 1000-1630 (Thur until 1800), Sat 1000-1400. Closed Sundays.
