Another local artist whose work I love. I was actually very tempted to buy one of her paintings at the exhibition she had at Soli Brug, Sarpsborg, a couple of years ago – it was a rather big painting of a group of people by what looked like a huge waterfall, in shades of blue, browns and white – reminded me of Gullfoss in Island, very atmospheric, and just beautiful! Only the price tag (around 10,000Kr if I remember correctly) stopped me Anyway… When I say local artist I mean an artist based here, by the way, because Ana Luisa comes from Mexico originally, but Norway has been her home for the past 10 years – she now lives in Eidsberg, Indre-Østfold, although she still spends the winter in Mexico whenever she can. Her husband grows and sells organic Christmas trees, while she paints in her studio. Østfold Art Centre (Østfold Kunstnersenter)

Østfold Art Centre is the main venue in Fredrikstad for visual and applied arts. The artist-run centre, which is housed in a 1800s white wooden building on Fergestedsveien, puts on temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing the work of many local artists, as well as that of other Norwegian artists. Exhibition space spreads over two floors. There is a cosy cafe on site, and a shop. The centre so handles commissions for public and private spaces, arranges workshops and lectures, and collaborates on educational projects for children.

From Erik Werenskiold’s depictions of Telemark to the dramatic scenery of Northern Norway, uniquely captured by Peder Balke, this book will take you on a fascinating voyage. Artists featured include famous names such as Theodor Kittelsen, Edvard Munch, J.C. Dahl, Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude and Harald Sohlberg, as well as more recent (and perhaps lesser known) artists such as Sami John Andreas Savio and Marit Bockelie. Two of my personal favourites are Nikolai Astrup, famous for his colourful paintings of Jølster in Sogn og Fjordane, western Norway; and Christian Krohg, for his vivid, realistic depictions of city life in Norway in the late 19th – early 20th century.
