Travelling by rail in Norway
Posted by admin in Travel and practical stuff on January 4, 2010
All train services in Norway are run by NSB (Norwegian State Railways). Tel: 8150 0888, dial ‘4′ for an English-speaking operator; www.nsb.no (site in English). The system is efficient, and trains comfortable, making travelling by rail a pleasant experience.
Seats on express trains must be reserved. There are buffet/restaurant cars on some trains, and sleepers on long-distance overnight services. Children under 4 years travel free of charge; those aged 4 to 14 years pay half price.
Excellent value Minipris tickets are available on most routes, but must be purchased well in advance. Distance is irrelevant, so you could travel from Halden in Østfold to Fauske, the northernmost point on the Norwegian rail system, for as little as 199Kr (full price is 1,376Kr). A real bargain, but you might need to be a bit flexible re. dates.
If you’re planning on travelling by rail a lot during your stay in Norway, investing in an InterRail One-Country Pass might be a good idea. The pass offers travel for 3, 4, 6 or 8 days in Norway within a one-month period. Reductions of up to 50% apply for children and youth. Supplements are required for some high-speed services, seat reservations and couchettes. Valid only for non-residents. More info at www.interrailnet.com, or NSB (see above).
Huge increase in traffic at Moss Rygge Airport
Passenger numbers at Moss Rygge Airport are on the up. Ryanair’s starting operations at Rygge this autumn has given the Østfold airport a huge boost. Traffic figures show an increase of 28,000 passengers in October alone, bringing the total number of passengers for this month to 72,000. This is an increase of 63% compared to September, when only 44,000 passengers travelled through the airport. It is now expected that Moss Rygge Airport will have had an annual traffic of around 600,000 passengers this year. And with Ryanair establishing its first Norwegian base at Rygge in March 2010, the airport is touted to become Norway’s fifth largest.

Ryanair to open base at Rygge in March 2010
Posted by admin in News, Travel and practical stuff on November 25, 2009
Ryanair today announced it will open its 37th base at Moss Rygge Airport in March 2010. The carrier (Europe’s largest airline), will invest more than US$200 million at Rygge, using it as the base for three aircraft and over 100 weekly return flights. Ryanair will offer 16 new routes from Oslo Rygge, to Aarhus, Berlin, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Eindhoven, Gdansk, Krakow, La Rochelle, Malaga, Memmingen (Munich West), Palma, Paris, Riga, Wroclaw, Valencia and Venice. Ryanair hopes to increase its traffic at Oslo Rygge to 1.7 million passengers per year, creating and sustaining 1,700 local jobs. This is Ryanair’s first base in Norway.

New Stansted-Rygge route starts today
Posted by admin in News, Travel and practical stuff on October 1, 2009
Good and bad news! There is at long last a direct route between London and Østfold (Rygge Airport). The bad news is that the route is operated Ryanair (my least favourite airline!). I really wish Norwegian had seen the potential of this route and taken the slot. But anyway – we now have direct flights to England daily, and I’ll sure make use of the service.
